Doing their own TV

Videotron Cable television, long the repository of low-end community programming, is being reinvented by young graduates like (left to right) Nadine Ishak (BA Journalism 98), Travis Todd (Dip in Journalism 97), Todd Van der Hayden (to get his graduate Diploma in Communication Studies this year) and Silvia Cademartori (BA Journalism 92), who work for Vidéotron Cable 9. Cademartori is host and Todd reporter and co-producer on Downtown Express, a lively magazine about the local entertainment scene. It's seen on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 and 11 p.m. Van der Hayden is the host and Ishak the reporter on Municipal Affairs, seen four times a week. The shows aren't marketed, but they're gaining an increasing audience, Cademartori said, and considerable freedom is given to the staff. "We have almost carte blanche."
