October 12, 2000 A woman of mystery

Painting by Emily Coonan

Emily Coonan, who painted Italian Girl, seen at left, was born in Pointe St. Charles in 1885; she was the daughter of a machinist, and probably didn’t get as far as high school. Her passion for art and her quiet determination to be herself led to a remarkably successful career in an era when women were suppressed, and women artists scorned.
